Board Game Capital's Review:
(2018-06-20)
Nightlancer ContentsIf you are into a whole game experience where a story unfolds and engulfs you and the other players as together you work through the game either helping or betraying each other trying to accomplish missions and grab any point you possibly can, then Nightlancer is the perfect game for you! This is not a laid back casual game - it is intended for those that like to immerse themselves for a couple hours to play out a game with so many possibilities and twists themed around a futuristic cyberpunk mafia style atmosphere. It will definitely appeal to those that enjoy playing RPG or other similar style games. The ins and outs on how to play Nightlancer will quickly make sense as you play through the game. We played with three people but can see how things can drastically change with varying amounts of people in the game - that's a good thing.

Nightlancer CardThe biggest things we like about this game are how little extra details are added into this game, background, story lines and other information that help create such a deep and interesting story that you get to cooperatively play through with the other players. The imagination and creativity behind Nightlancer is amazing. Going head to head with others on a mission steps things up a notch and really adds some excitement. Also, allowing you to play by yourself, with up to four other players and play cooperatively really opens up the possibilities of playing this game. Players don't just go turn to turn but rather converse, persuade, outsmart and try to outwit their opponents.

Nightlancer PlayersWith games of this caliber, you'd expect to have a game that is well built with strong materials (laser cut) and very professionally design pieces and graphics - Nightlancer doesn't disappoint in this regard. The price seems a little steep but you will get your moneys worth in both the physical components as well as the game experience. From the game box design, to the cards, to the character summary cards all the way to the game board - this is a quality game. Our version was a prototype so exact internal packaging of game pieces looks like it is still being determined.

There is a lot going on in Nightlancer and the 32 page rule book covers things pretty well with plenty of pictures and examples. Nightlancer BoardThe four phases are explained well and those familiar with this type of game will catch on quickly. Players will need to manage and use to their advantage their character's status, setup, abilities, special abilities, opportunity cards, missions, black market and contact cards. The game board seems a little plain and simple at first glance but once cards are laid in their correct spots the board comes to life. With the whole game spread out on the table, it is an impressive game that looks great.

Not much we didn't like - this is a very well created game. The only disclaimer we would put out there is to know what type of game this is. To most average/casual game players, this game is going to be way over their heads. To others, this is a perfect and challenging game with a fun (and somewhat dark) narrative with great game mechanics.
