Board Game Capital's Review:
(2020-11-02)
You've probably heard the saying that big things come in small packages. When we opened this medium sized game box, we found a tiny game inside. You'll get a deck of 52 cards and four rather unique score keepers. You could probably fit five of these games inside this box. However, this is a big game in terms of fun, strategy, luck and mayhem.

AmbushWe felt like the creators of the game very successfully mixed some gaming mechanics in a way that created a very different and entertaining card game. Ambush appeals to the hard core battling card game crowd as well as the party going grab all the cards you can crowd. We loved this! The suspense of not completely knowing what is on the table is brilliant, yelling AMBUSH is exhilarating and penalizing someone's false ambush is very rewarding. We thought our games had a sense of light strategy, lots of luck and goofy suspension. This game definitely tailors to multiple styles of gamers and does it well.

Ok, so now that we told you this game is awesome and that you should probably get your own copy, here are a few minor issues we had with the game. Keep in mind these are just our opinions, and don't detract from the fun of the game. We already mentioned number one, the box is really big for what's inside. It's sturdy and nicely built but a tad big and very simple on the graphics (no basic information on the sides of the box).

Number two; we felt the cards were really wordy and even hard to read at times against like-color backgrounds. Icons instead of text here might have helped get away from small paragraphs. Inconsistent locations for damage on the cards kept you on the hunt. Graphics on the cards are very original and well done - it just felt like the words were thrown on last minute. Learning all the abilities and strategy to actually play this game will take time as there is a lot to remember on each card - no worries though because it's on each card. The first game is really slow and strategically confusing since you really have to accustom yourself with what each card does.

AmbushSome other good things we haven't mentioned are the super cool damage trackers. Those are just awesome. We loved how useful and small they were. They worked flawlessly! Rules are very well written though again a little wordy and lack pictorial examples. Quality of all gaming components is good and nothing feels super cheap.

This is a really fun game and looks more serious than it really is. We played this a few times and each round was more and more fun. This is a card game that you'll want to have in your gaming collection because it so nicely blends a battle cards game with a free for all grabbing party game. Hats off to the game creators for this brilliant move.
