Azimuth - ride the winds. And ride the winds you must! This clever game is another great creation from Tyto Games where players will need to ride the winds to help save their castaway and bring them safely home to their lighthouse.
While the feel of the game is a little mystical and historic, the game mechanics are fresh and unique. Don't turn away from this game because it may not appeal to you - don't judge this game by the cover. We feel like a fun, bright theme on this game might be more upbeat and appealing to players. The illustrations chosen are what they are and don't impact the fun of the game (just our opinion with the game box cover art).
Where to start on the fun? These are a few things we love love loved about this game. Players get to change the winds which affect the direction of rafts (huge strategic point). Rafts can get stacked on top of each other which throws a fun twist on things. Letting the castaway swing to an adjacent raft is a nice little option to have in your back pocket. We loved how each game (2 player, 3 player or 4 player) has a different board setup which renders itself to an ever-changing possibility of outcomes. Players get to choose where to place their saving lighthouse at the beginning of the game (and what a mighty fine lighthouse it is). And lastly, maybe a small thing, but in the two player board setup, you are actually sitting next to your opponent - something not too common, which we liked.
Not much to say about game quality - it is top notch. Everything from game box, to instructions, to game pieces are best of the best. The only suggestion we had on the rafts were to make it so that the edges of the rafts showed their color which would help you see which raft is stacked under which raft (instead of offsetting them slightly). Although, this would then give away the random sorting at the beginning of the game... The game is simple in contents and doesn't take a huge amount of space to store or play.
The instructions do such a great job explaining every aspect of the game and give very helpful examples to various situations. Learning how to play isn't too hard but may take a few minutes to read through the whole rule book. When you are done, you'll have a pretty firm grasp on the do's and don'ts - playing it once will really set the rules in your mind and make game play easier and more fun to tackle. Keep them handy for the first time through.
We'd write more about how awesome this game is but we'd really rather just play it again. We definitely recommend Azimuth if you are looking for something above your typical no-brainer board game and don't want a complicated, time consuming experience. Azimuth gives a fair amount of strategy and replayability plus it's fun for ages 10 and up and only takes about 30 minutes! We're hooked!
