What a fun little game. We were really excited to see that this game comes in such a cute themed storage container with the top shaped like a crown. This is a plastic container and very durable. We were a little nervous to lift and carry the game by the lid since the weight of the game came in close to 2lbs but it held up just fine. Inside you'll find 60 thick, solid plastic crown coins.
These coins are awesome and are thick! They stack well and have a two tone plastic molded design. Telling the King, Queen and Prince apart is a little tricky but knowing a few things to look for you'll be just fine. Once you learn what each special coin does, the game plays like a breeze. While the manufacturers says it's great for ages 5+, this is true but they'll need some help to keep the game going and keep track of what goes where.
Our kid testers loved the game and it was fun for an adult to play with them. Crown War plays quick and gives kids the chance to try and win the next round (since they'll want to play again). One thing we noticed with our older tester (8 years old) is she caught on and tried to study where things were when we were laying out the coins. It's hard to keep them all face down so if one turned over that gave her a slight advantage over the younger more oblivious kids. This is a kid's game, so it's not a big deal. Optional rules are available in the rules that give a new spin on the game.
We had a crown war that got three coins deep and added some fun excitement to the game. Game play is totally random so being able to switch coin piles with someone else or gain two (or loose two) from each player helped even things out. We really enjoyed this game and think it's a fun game to play and have on your shelf if you have kid players. Kids love boxes of things so having all these coins to play with was a real hit.
