For a card game that only contains 74 cards, this little genie game packs a punch. Some people might shy away from card games where players duel using special powers on each card. While this game does just that, it is a very simple, light hearted, genie themed and super easy game to learn how to play. Oh, and did we mention it is a blast to play?
Djinns of the High Desert comes in a very, very sturdy little box - as if it was made to keep all these angry genies inside their lamp - I mean storage box. There is “itty bitty living space” inside and everything fits snug. We would have liked to see at least one graphic on the game rules although they do give you a cheat sheet card for reference (again with no graphics).
After looking at the graphics for a long time, we noticed and felt like the box graphics somewhat underrated the card graphics (which are very well done). Box was very simple and basic - cards were highly detailed fantasy themed and somewhat dark. We also thought that each color card had the same image on each. While this is mostly true, each power of card actually tweaks the genie ever so subtly. A more noticeable change would have helped differentiate the power cards other than just the number in the corner.
That aside (we mostly just nit picked so we wouldn't just rave about how cool this game is), this is an awesome game with so many twists and turns. Players try to collect the most of one color that is constantly changing throughout the game. Players are stealing cards, demanding others, abolishing some forever, making wishes, peaking at cards, etc. Actions are very simple and consistency in each power card means all #1 cards are “draw a card.” Once you play a couple times you'll learn which is which and you won't necessarily have to read each card - we liked this. Unused cards count against you so the game isn't over until it's over which keeps you on edge until the end of the game. Oh, and not bringing your hand up to a consistent number or having a hand maximum was very interesting.
Overall we highly enjoyed Djinns of the High Desert and feel like most people would if they gave it a try. This is not just for intense game enthusiasts. Ages 8+ feels about right (since there is some reading involved). This is a nicely done card game with a lot of simple fun packed in. The cards basically explain the game so learning how to play is a breeze. And with that, we're done reviewing this game because we want to go play again...
