Board Game Capital's Review:
(2019-08-06)
Everyone has played a 2D, traditional board or card game before. However, not very many have played a 3D tabletop game that gets your brain thinking a whole new way. Complete with vibrant colors, fairly straight forward game rules and a tall structure (playing field) that has endless possibilities, the creators might just live up to their claim of the "world's best 3D strategy game!"
Gridopolis is definitely an eye catcher. When the game is in full swing, it looks pretty wild and interesting. While we see in 3D, thinking in 3D is something some don't have to do very often and can be a little challenging. But who's not up for a good, fun challenge? Gridopolis is a wonderful game for a small group (up to four people) or possibly more if multiple boxes are purchased. Game play typically takes around 30 minutes but could last much longer if in a heated battle with a close competitor.
Options, options, options! This game has endless possibilities. From the different game setups, to the two different ways to win, each round will never be a repeat and will scream "play me again!" We played twice with four people and we are still on the edge of our seats wanting to play again. While this game uses very simple game tactics, basic checkers type game play, it can be challenging to keep track of everything. Some game rules make things very interesting and can seem like they just make the game more complicated. Once you get the hang of it though, they won't seem so overwhelming.
Blocking locations, multiple jump options, becoming kings, kamikazes, morphing tower, hyper pads, 3D jumping...all this together can be challenging for some kids or even adults. We found some caught on really well while others really struggled with this. The game is made to be built over and over so while the pieces fit nicely together, the structure shakes a little and if not careful, pieces can be bumped off the grid. Sometimes maneuvering in dense pawn areas can be a bit tricky. Lastly, if a three player game is being played, one player is at a slight disadvantage because no one is directly in front of them. Also, set up and take down can take a few minutes and structure needs to be broken down to fit back into the box. There, we said it; now let's get back to saying cool stuff about Gridopolis.
Game pieces are 100% professional plastic injected pieces. This game can even be dubbed an awesome building toy if no one wants to play by the rules. All this together with the price point where it is, you're getting a real deal. Learning that Gridopolis has won multiple game and toy awards makes perfect sense and they deserve it. We loved just about everything about this game and how different it is. It's such an educational toy and would make a very, very good family gift! Great for casual games and lighthearted serious players. There is definitely enough strategy and fun to go around.
