Love word games? Like to play board games? Need a great party game? Whew crams all the fun from all three and creates a great game for all ages. You'll be saying "whew" as the timer runs out. Don't get caught with the pencil or pass too much as this will make you advance on the board (something you don't want to do).
Whew is a bright and colorful game and offers a lot of variety in word sound challenges. Some sounds are easy while others will leave you scratching your head. Perfect for 2 to 12 players and is an easy game to learn how to play. If you play once, you'll want to play it again and again. Give Whew a try today.
Board Game Capital's Review:
(2018-03-02)
Whew is a word game that meets a party game that meets a board game. These three elements create quite a fun and unique game playing experience. Teams or players attempt to make as many words that start or end with the selected sounds as they can before the timer runs out. Let the game begin and your brain freeze up. Don't get caught with the pencil when the timer runs out or use too many passes as these will advance your demise.
The timer for Whew is an app that is downloaded (not included in the box). We are a little biased and would rather all that is needed to play the game be in the box but can see that this isn't a huge deal and is easily achieved with everyone having smart phones.
Our favorite twist on the game was the fact that if a player lands on a color other than their own, whoever is that same color must advance to that space. Kind of like randomly taking another player down with you. This helps even out the playing field and makes game play a little faster. Nothing like being pulled down by other players against your will.
Game quality is a step above most big box store games. The game board is thick and other game pieces are well built. We loved the bright fun theme of the game. The colors add to the excitement. We were a little disappointed to see a rules sheet that looked like it came off of someone's printer but maybe that's just us being a little nit picky.
All our small complaints aside, this is a great game! You'll love the moderate challenge and friendly competitiveness that it brings out. We all wanted to play again as our minds raced with new possible words. Each card has six possible sound choices (based on the die roll) so there is plenty of variation built into the game. We had a blast playing Whew and we know you will too.
