What do you get when you cross a giraffe, a praying mantis and a penguin? Sounds like a setup to a joke right? No, in this game you really might end up with that kind of a creature and its name would be a Maiffeguin. Mixing and matching, stealing and borrowing features from all kinds of moving living things is the key to this game. We'll be honest, we thought this would be harder than it sounded due to our total lack of drawing skills and the fact that real pictures were being used instead of cartoon ones. But after a few rounds, we were all having fun and drawing some insane doodles.
In concept, Doodle Mash is a very straight forward game where you use three features from three different animal/insect to create one creature. This is a very interesting game mechanic for a drawing game and we liked it. It was somewhat challenging but very fun. Where we felt a little confused was the rule for max number of physical features. We constantly had to stop and think about it and it kind of detracted from the fun of the game. While we understand and agree with some kind of regulation on the things people draw, this was a little thorn in our side during the game.
One more gripe - the game rules show some example plays. We have yet to figure them out. While they look like they could be very helpful, it feels like it is a very strategic sports play to a game we've never heard of. Other than that, the rules were written fairly well but a little wordy at times. More helpful graphics would have been nice.
We really liked the box artwork and hand drawn theme through out the game. The special cards look good and have some fun twists on them. The gaming components that we received were nice (real wooden tokens, draw string bag, thick vinyl game mat, etc.). We're slightly confused by the claim to have 100+ players. While teams might work, we're not seeing how that many people could play this game with only four stands for player pawns (ps, the fact that you have to draw your own player pawn was kind of hysterical - in a good way).
Overall, Doodle Mash is a fun game. It is very different from other games we've played. If you like drawing, animals or creating some interesting doodles then this game is for you. It's a quick, easy game to play with friends or family when you have a few minutes to spare and want some simple fun to pass the time.
