First things first - these hamsters are adorable. You'll have a blast using your cute little hamsters to plug and protect your dam from breaking. Even the back side of the cards has the hamsters turned around. We thought we were the only ones that used "-ster" at the end of people's name to make it sound cool. Maybe this game is just a copycatster...
We knew very little about the game Hamsterdam before it showed up for review. With just one look at the storage box we could tell this was going to be a fun game. The artwork used throughout the game has the feel of original passion from someone sketching away in their notebook on a subway. They are simple, yet detailed. Very skillfully done and professionally color shaded in their own unique way. The hamster/dam feel throughout the game is very nicely done.
While we are kind of on the topic, game quality is really good. The box is very sturdy, the cards feel nice and are slightly odd shaped (longer and thin), dice and tokens are acceptable and the rule book was nicely put together. The only point we can take off is the lack of a nice organizer inside the box. Components are in zip lock bags. Not sure what the cost increase might be but may be worth it to step this game into the next higher category.
We had a blast playing Hamsterdam. One quick read through the game rules and we were off and playing. We loved how many special hamsters there were. We were constantly saying, "Ooo, I wonder what this one does..." The creativity on these cards is a lot of fun. Adding water tokens to your dam cards (here come the dam jokes) was effective and we really like the addition of the turn tracker card. Being able to simplify the game so younger kids can play was a fun surprise at the end of the rule book. Great game!
We would absolutely recommend Hamsterdam to anyone looking for a fun, leisurely strategic and easy to learn card game. You'll want to play again and will be glad you added it to your gaming closet. After playing with adults, we played one round with younger kids and after a few minutes they grasped the concept of playing and were having a lot of fun with their furry little fixers.
