In Fjords, players are invited on a travel through a breathtaking landscape, even a Viking would catch his breath in. The game is divided into two big phases, each with its challenges. First, there is the phase of the exploration, where players lay hexagonal landscape tiles, creating a map of the fjords. This map forms the gameboard and sets the base for what comes next in this adventure.
Players place tile by tile, giving form to plains and cliffs as parts of the undulated landscape become clear. Players lay tiles that have terrain features shown in this initial stage of the game to work to their strategic advantage in the game's latter stages. In that sense, each placement determines subsequent movement or who is allowed on particular territories.
The map is then completed and the game reaches a second phase where the players begin from the placements made from earlier in the game from the longhouse. The players walk the landscape from these respective starting positions, moving across the fjords, claiming as much land as possible. The player possessing the largest amount of land has the greater possibility of winning. This part of the game would incorporate some foresightedness, placing pieces now but also having to think ahead to other moves.
The key to winning in Fjords is in land ownership. An intelligent player will lay his or her tiles in phase one so as to set up expensive possibilities in phase two. The player needs to successfully navigate the landscape and use the topography given to his advantage, balancing a long-term strategy with swift and fast action.
At the end of it all, that player who will have captured the most amount of land will be declared the winner. It makes Fjords dynamic since challenges requiring players to use their brains will keep them strategizing and making adjustments to suit the ever-altering landscape.

The players of Fjords play 3 rounds with new fjord regions each time. After the third round, the players sum their points for the 3 rounds. The player with the most points is the winner. If the players tie, the player who won 2 rounds is the winner of Fjords.
